A stability factor of 1.5 or greater ensures adequate stability and allows your Hornady bullet to fly at its maximum optimized BC.
How to Use the Twist Rate Calculator Hornady
Hornady bullets, particularly their ELD Match and ELD-X lines, are famous for their incredibly high Ballistic Coefficients. However, these sleek, polymer-tipped, boat-tail designs make the bullets exceptionally long for their weight. A longer bullet requires a faster barrel twist rate to stabilize. If you try to push a 147-grain 6.5mm ELD Match bullet out of an older 1-in-9 twist barrel, it won’t spin fast enough, causing it to tumble or suffer massive drag.
Here is how to ensure your Hornady rounds will fly perfectly:
- Select Your Projectile: Use the Hornady Bullet Library dropdown. We have pre-loaded the exact calibers, weights, physical lengths, and G7 BCs for Hornady’s most popular long-range and hunting bullets.
- Input Your Rifle Data: Enter the exact twist rate of your rifle barrel (e.g., 8, 9, or 10) and your expected muzzle velocity.
- Enter Your Environment: Cold air at sea level is dense and fights bullet spin. Enter the lowest temperature and altitude you plan to hunt or shoot in.
- Check Your SG Score: Look at the visual gauge. If the red arrow lands in the Comfortable Stability zone (1.5 SG or higher), your Hornady bullet will fly true and deliver its maximum advertised BC.
- Evaluate BC Loss: If you land in the Marginal Stability zone, the bullet won’t tumble, but its BC will degrade. The dashboard will tell you exactly what your newly adjusted BC is, which you must use in your ballistics calculator (like a Kestrel) to hit your target.
- Find Alternatives: If your rifle can’t stabilize your chosen bullet, scroll to the bottom. The Smart Recommendation engine will instantly suggest a lighter or shorter Hornady bullet in the same caliber that will work perfectly in your rifle.
